Played a lot in the Army, but not so much since. I loved that game though.

You play Joker, Joker, Deuce, Ace or no? (I always thought that was the natural hierarchy until I played with civilians, who acted like I was preaching voodoo or something.)

Yep, we played Spades all the time in the Barracks and in the field...

We always pulled the 2 of hearts and of diamonds and left the jokers in. Big joker, little joker, 2 of spades, then ace of spades and on down; that was how we played.

Generally speaking from my experience, the JJ2A method was more prevelant among the blacks I played with.....and whites played without the jokers and allowed you to go nil when you wanted.

I was thinking the same thing. I used to play a lot in university and it was always JJ2A with my black friends.

In spades the point is to accumulate tricks....the opposite of hearts (unless shooting the moon).
