Tonight, with their lottery position locked up, the Lakers will honor that anniversary by closing the season with their 6th straight win by whooping the Warriors.

Too bad Kobe was slacking off in all the other games he played that season... had he played all year with the sort effort he showed in his last game, maybe the Lakers compete for the playoffs.

In his final NBA game, Michael Jordan scored 15 points. He was outscored by his own teammate - the one & only Kwame Brown.

Fisher, after his unsettling wait, was wide with the first pitch. He put the second one over, and Williams swung mightily and missed. The crowd grunted, seeing that classic swing, so long and smooth and quick, exposed, naked in its failure. Fisher threw the third time, Williams swung again, and there it was. The ball climbed on a diagonal line into the vast volume of air over center field. From my angle, behind third base, the ball seemed less an object in flight than the tip of a towering, motionless construct, like the Eiffel Tower or the Tappan Zee Bridge. It was in the books while it was still in the sky. Brandt ran back to the deepest corner of the outfield grass; the ball descended beyond his reach and struck in the crotch where the bullpen met the wall, bounced chunkily, and, as far as I could see, vanished.

Like a feather caught in a vortex, Williams ran around the square of bases at the center of our beseeching screaming. He ran as he always ran out home runs—hurriedly, unsmiling, head down, as if our praise were a storm of rain to get out of. He didn’t tip his cap. Though we thumped, wept, and chanted “We want Ted” for minutes after he hid in the dugout, he did not come back. Our noise for some seconds passed beyond excitement into a kind of immense open anguish, a wailing, a cry to be saved. But immortality is nontransferable. The papers said that the other players, and even the umpires on the field, begged him to come out and acknowledge us in some way, but he never had and did not now. Gods do not answer letters.

Psssst... this thread is about Kobe. Stop obsessing over Jordan, it makes you look foolish.

Ted Williams' last season: 29-HR / .316-BA / .451-OBP / .645-SLG (1.096-OPS) / 190-OPS+ (daaaaamn!!)

Begs the (rhetorical) question, why the hell did he retire..!?!

WoW...!!

What? What the hell is wrong with him? He should have went out shooting every one of the teams shots, at least 50-60 shots. :L

What a ridiculous comparison, and pure bullshit I might add. 60 pt games in the NBA aren't nearly as common as someone simply connecting on the sweet spot of the bat with the right trajectory for it to leave the park, regardless of age of hitter, or how poetic it was capsulated by UpDyke.

Had Williams went yard 3 times that game, then and only then, could we begin to compare his exit from the game with Kobe's. Straight the fuck up!
