Post your NBA Top Ten ATG and criteria

Post by Sudanese Sensation »

I will post Griff's for him and his criteria:

#1 - Kobe Bryant
#2 - Michael Jordan
#3 - Larry Bird
#4 - Hakeem Olajuwon
#5 - John Stockton
#6 - Kevin Garnett
#7 - Jerry West
#8 - Rick Barry
#9 - Kevin Durant
#10 - Dirk Nowitzki

these are probably the 10 most talented guys i've ever seen play basketball

Mine

1 Jordan
2 Kareem
3 Russell *
4 James
5 Johnson
6 Chamberlain*
7 Duncan
8 O'Neal
9 Bryant
10 Olajuwon

Based on singular accomplishments, team accomplishments, peak value, career value, and lift.

If I used any single criterion my list might look different. For instance if I used peak value it would be a push between James, Jordan, and Shaq. If I used career value it would be a push between James, Kareem and Duncan. If I used lift it might be James.

I was going to do a 10a and 10b because a top ten list without Bird doesn't look right however that would look like a cop out.

lebrons 3 for 8 finals record in todays soft era is not something you place above guys with twice as many rings and a winning finals record back when eras actually had real legends standing in their way

tony parker, jason terry, kawhi leonard, andre iguodala are just some of the names of guys that have completely destroyed lebron in an nba finals

does kobe get utterly ass fucked by any of these men?

no

please log off and kill yourself for placing lebron 2nd

my respect for you just dropped to a new low.. i could watch you committ suicide without batting an eye

Mind explaining how LeBron is above Kareem or Bill?

Curious as to your logic. Don't necessarily disagree with it really.

Here's mine:

1. Jordan
2. Russell
3. Kareem
4. LeBron
5. Magic
6. Wilt
7. Bird
8. Duncan
9. Shaq
10. Kobe
11. Hakeem

It's really really hard (and getting harder) to compare players between eras.

I think James has an incredibly high prime... and nearing unprecedented longevity. He's been the best in the game for most of his career. And while he has had an easier path to the Finals than many others... he keeps getting there. He deserves some credit for that.

I can see why others would have Russell at #2 for his winning. Or, Kareem for his combo of winning, stats and longevity. I'm running with James because he's been part of the NBA during a pretty drastic change in how it's played... and he's been awesome the entire time.

In exercises like this, I have a hard time seeing how anyone can justify putting significant space between Duncan, Kobe, and Shaq. Personally, I have Kobe just behind the first two, but I think one can easily justify putting them in any order.

Very fair. That logic is essentially why I just recently decided to put LeBron at 4. It's personally not enough to hop Bill or Kareem yet but he could by the time he retires.

Jordan would be tough to jump at this point. Whether or not LeBron realizes it yet, the biggest obstacle in his entire career from reaching Jordan's tier was Durant choosing GS. While I don't believe rings are the end all be all, I also believe they're very important and as this Cavs team is currently constructed it will be almost impossible for them to compete with the Warriors. No guarantee they even come out of the East

While not my favorite exercise, it can lead to engaging discussion (depending on the participants).

Yes.

First of all you're not listing your favorite players. You're listing the best players which is nearly impossible to do because of how much the game has changed over the years.

In fact, there should be more tangible metrics you can use when doing this for sports than any of those things.

There's no real way to compare players across generations because of how much sports has changed. We have no way of knowing just how each player would fair given the others' circumstances. Trying to decide who is the best all time is too reliant on opinions and personal bias.

Same could be said about other forms of entertainment I guess although I do think it's different. There is one objective in sports. In music, movies, tv shows and wives, there's tons of objectives. It's too much to decide who does the best at what objective.

Without really thinking it through to the nth degree. The biggest change is I'm going to drop Wilt out of the top eight which I know many will find sacrilegious. I've always had him there mostly because of his incredible statistics, but arguments from FPL and a few others from the Backpick thread have made me put greater weight on his flaws.

Russell
Jordan
KAJ
LeBron
Magic
Duncan
Bird (Bush points in another thread convinced me to drop him)
Shaq (I'm more impressed with how dominating he was for his peak years than most)
Hakeem
And I'll cop out and tie Kobe and Wilt at ten.

Apologies for the double post. For some reason on my phone, it won't allow me to delete a post in the last little while. I'll do it from my tablet when I go back inside.
