Griff is seriously fucked up. I don't know how much I would blame on any particular thing, including porn, but he's in a really bad place.

He's managed to convince himself that he's "retired" when he's unemployed because he lacks skills and education and can't get any kind of meaningful job. He is denial and I am not joking when I say I believe he's clinically depressed.

I don't get any kind of vibe like that from Gas. He's a "normal" guy, whatever the hell that means these days who knows he's smart and goes about his business. I think he takes his sports a little too seriously (they just aren't that important), but that's hardly unusual. And he's a likable dude.

I think it's some kind of structured trust. If memory serves, he gets something like 3-4k a month pre-tax. But he has to live within a fairly tight budget and can't even afford a freaking vacation. He doesn't even travel within the country. But I believe he's not working because there's nothing he's qualified to do. He's only ever worked retail and has lied about that. He claimed to make $30 an hour from a sports retailer here in Canada. They used to be a public company and I know how they compensated people, and he might have had some days where he made $30 an hour, but he sure as hell wasn't making anywhere near that on a day to day basis. So he self medicates with alcohol, porn, Lord knows what else and prides himself in screwing trailer trash. It's not pretty.

Those studies have been thoroughly refuted Carl. They came from an anti-porn group, and were based on a paper that the author himself said shouldn't be used for that purpose. There is zero empirical evidence to support these laws.
On the flip side, when porn was legalized in Denmark, there was a demonstrated drop in sexual assault cases.
I don't get it, it's not like watching basketball negatively affects the ability to play the game or enjoy it.

On the phone side, our kids got theirs as a middle school graduation gift.
They complained a lot, but it's been fine.

Totally talking out of my ass here because I don't know jack shit on the subject, but I suspect that porn is like other things people can get addicted to. I think it probably depends on their personality type and their propensity to get addicted to anything. Some people just are easily addicted to many different things, most of which are usually bad.

Another thing is what makes it "bad"? Most of the time it's just about religious teachings, not any tangible evidence.

What 'tangible evidence' would convince you? You do know what tangible means - touch/felt, real substance. Perhaps that's why there is no tangible evidence... The effects on behaviour and the brain could very well be true/fact, but never tangible.

I'm sure that it will impact people to varying degrees but there is no doubt in my mind that porn consumption is a net negative for virtually everyone, mostly for the reasons that Bush expressed in regards to evolutionary standing but for day-to-day reasons as well.

One chick pulled the plug because she caught a glimpse of my browser history and saw I had watched porn while we were seeing each other. She said I "cheated" on her. I couldn't kick out the door quick enough. Get da fuck outta here.

I love reading grizz's takes on Griff. He has him pegged so accurately. It's depressing but entertaining at the same time.

I am on the record as saying any activity that interferes with your life and interactions with other human beings in a negative way is probably not good for you. I believe what he is looking for is peer reviewed research. Intuitively porn changes one's expectations of sex.

That being said the toothpaste is out of the tube. The internet has made porn ubiquitous. Even in nations like Saudi Arabia and China with firewalls those who want to see porn find a way around them and see porn.

I feel about porn the same way I feel about a lot of hot button social issues, that before you can change the laws you have to change the culture as the former is a reflection of the latter.

In short if you are eschewing personal relationships and sitting in your bedroom with a bag of Cheetos, orange stained fingers, and porn on the lap top you probably have a problem.

I don't believe that "healthy porn viewing" exists. I think that you can probably watch porn in moderation and be not too much worse for the wear but even a tiny bit of porn watching is a tiny bit of bad for the brain in my view. It's not what we're programmed to derive pleasure from.

For the sake of discussion let's stipulate porn isn't good for you. What is to be done ?

Outside of actively discouraging its use I don't see many ways to eliminate it. I have seen women on tv trying to shame men who watch porn. It's hard to shame people for activities they usually do clandestinely.

I basically agree with your post, but there is a lot of space for problems to take place between a happy/healthy relationship and incel cheeto-eaters ignoring women.

Not every problem is a red-alert.

I personally view it like eating. I usually eat clean, but I definitely will enjoy ice cream or candy sometimes. I don't obsess and feel guilty when I do eat ice cream, but I also recognize that I am doing something unhealthy, and I would be healthier if I ate some fruit instead of ice cream.

I also think (like with food), modern technology has made it really easy to "be bad", and really raised the threat for people who are vulnerable to overuse (for whatever reason).

That was my doctor's evolutionary explanation for obesity. In the days of yore when you were hungry you had to go out and hunt for your food. Now you just go to the refrigerator or cupboard.

Without overintellectualizing it I would say porn is a net negative. That being said the more it controls your life the more negative it becomes.

Very true.

I wonder how prominent movements like "Men Going Their Own Way" (MGTOW) would be if there wasn't such an immediate and powerful electronic turn-switch for sexual stimulation. They largely feel disgusted/disturbed (not entirely without reason) by intergender dynamics in our society, but I wonder how much things like porn push them to simply quit relationships and women instead of trying to navigate the terrain a bit.

It fulfills a need traditionally found in flesh-and-blood relationships, albeit in a twisted and warped way.

Given the fact that Grizz and Griff are fellow countrymen maybe the former should try to be a positive role model for the latter. Griff is a relatively young man and still has the possibility of making a purpose driven life for himself.

Believe it or not, that has at least been partly my motivation in posting about Griff. He's not a moron. I think he "knows" that he's deluding himself and just putting on a front. He's still a young man and has a million potential options open to him, but he needs to completely admit that he's living a lie right now before he gets on a new path. The really damning assessments of him I've made here are definitely "mostly" motivated by a 1 in a 1000 chance it might wake him up.
