Tossup between 72 Lakers and 83 Sixers for me.
Both teams destroyed their competition over the regular season and playoffs, each eliminating the prior champ.
Both were one hit wonders.

Every defending championship team from '67 to '87 was a one hit wonder.Odogg wrote:Tossup between 72 Lakers and 83 Sixers for me.

But still you had some teams that won multiple titles, albeit not back/back.y2ktors wrote:Every defending championship team from '67 to '87 was a one hit wonder.Odogg wrote:Tossup between 72 Lakers and 83 Sixers for me.

It is interesting that the greatest dynasty in NBA history, the late fifties to late sixties Celtics isn't represented. The only team represented from the era is the Sixers.

Good call. I was assuming OP had researched that before he made his statement.elmouse03 wrote:ummmmmmmmm 68 and 69 Celtics.Odogg wrote:But still you had some teams that won multiple titles, albeit not back/back.y2ktors wrote: Every defending championship team from '67 to '87 was a one hit wonder.

The champion years get fuzzy to me if it was before I was born.

If I'm not mistaken those Celtics were the first teams to win both 50 and 60 games in a season. Maybe the '65 Celts were the best of the bunch.

I noticed that again too. There was some discussion in one of the prior threads.vcsgrizzfan wrote:It is interesting that the greatest dynasty in NBA history, the late fifties to late sixties Celtics isn't represented. The only team represented from the era is the Sixers.

Re 72 Lakers, although Wilt had transitioned into a defensive/rebounding (at a 20RB/game clip) role, Jerry West was still playing close to a prime level, averaging 26/10 in the regular season, 23/9 in the playoffs. Gail Goodrich was the high scorer on the team at just a point more than West. But I know Goodrich more for being the guy they traded to the Jazz years later for the pick that turned into Magic.
Happy Hairston the PF averaged 13/13 and Jim McMillan the SF scored 19/game.
Amazingly consistent and clutch team, all the guys basically had the same averages in the regular season and the playoffs.
The team had no bench, other than Pat Riley, lol.

Russell's C's have 3 squads that you can put in here. 59-60 when they went 59-16. 10 games better than the 2nd best team in the east and 13 better than the best team in the West. 61-62 when they went 60-20 in Cousy's 2nd to last year. 64-65 when they went 62-18. Had the defensive combination of Russell, Sanders, Hondo, and KC Jones. Sam Jones had the best season of his career.
