That's one of the reasons I have a hard time picking Curry here cause of his really small sample size however he's improved every year and is putting up better numbers than Ray however Ray played much longer. Due to that I still think I'm gonna have to go with Curry this round.
I would argue that the impact of Curry's shooting abilities is actually still being underestimated by most fans, in terms of how it impact the Warriors's offense (and therefore odds of winning).
I bet that if you looked at +/ material related to offense for Curry this past year, his numbers would be stupifying.
I think sometimes it's easier to play the "look beyond the numbers" card when a player is effective in a way that breaks the traditional mold in some way. For example, Walton being an amazingly good passer while not exactly being an explosive and overwhelming scorer.
Relatedly, I think fans play the card less when a player does something traditionally associated with stardom...but in a way that exceeds even the traditional star performance, even if it still contains some more subtle aspects---like floor spacing benefits).
