I've seen that before and I don't want it that bad. I don't want to bust ass for 25 years just to enjoy my retirement. I'd rather balance work, family and play for my entire life even if that means I never have a few million in the bank.

That's exactly how I feel. I want to enjoy my life now. Not in 25 years.Robceltsfan wrote:I've seen that before and I don't want it that bad. I don't understand this line of thinking. I know plenty of people who are successful and work hard, and also enjoy their lives. He doesn't say you have to work 24/7 either.

I've tried the schemes that a guy like this is usually a part of. Things like Amway where motivational speakers like this are a dime a dozen. They expect you to spend every waking moment of your life devoting time to the cause. They expect you to defer your wants now to enable your dreams later. They expect you to convince others to do this same thing. To be honest, it works. I can't deny that I've seen people have success in this manner, but it requires an obscene amount of time and effort in the beginning (think 10-15 years) in order to reap the rewards afterwards. Good for people that can or want to do that. They'll have success.
I simply can't afford to miss chunks of my children's childhood in order to justify being "rich" in my late 40's and beyond. I'm fairly successful and am on-track to be a VP and make 6-figures in the next decade or so, but if someone today tells me that I have to start working 65+ hours a week for the next 10 years to get there, otherwise I'll peak at $85,000/year, I'll be happy settling for the $85,000. I have no desire to miss out on life like that.

I feel sorry for people that are so pessimistic about their abilities. It's not pessimism. I said I'm already successful and on track to continue that success. But if someone dangled the brass ring in front of me saying, "hey, it's right there, all you have to do is devote a shit-ton of time to get it", then I'm out. I have no desire to work that hard just to make more money than I need to be happy. I live in a nice home, in a nice neighborhood. I'm married with two kids. We have nice vehicles and we go out once or twice a weekend with no worries about money. My wife and I are both college graduates. We make more than enough to provide for our family, send the kids to college, and retire comfortably. I don't have the work ethic or desire to bust my ass just be be MORE comfortable at retirement.

Re: How bad do you want it?
I don't think it is that so much as it is being honest with themselves about their preferences in life, and how to best maximize the things that will bring them happiness, in light of tradeoffs that need to be made.AlaskaHawks wrote:

I know a little bit about this from academic life. A lot of people wanted me to go into a traditional tenured professor type role. But besides academica being totally poisoned, people on a tenure track routinely work 80 hours a week, and in the level beyond that usually 50-60 (if they are still interested in advancement). Of course, once you get tenure and aren't interested in advancement, you can largely "punch the clock".
I decided it wasn't worth it, and I would trade off having less freedom (and way less interest) in my daily job to have more flexibility with consulting, writing, and family life.
Eventually, something has to give somewhere.

The guy is speaking to a class of what looks to be high schoolers or college kids. It's a little bit different to drive home the point when you're 19-20 than when you're in your thirties already with a house, career, and family. Hopefully some of those kids took his words to heart.

Exactly. I'm happy for those that have the drive to succeed and put in the time and effort to get there. They deserve their just rewards for their hard work. I'm simply not one of those people past a certain point.

Re: How bad do you want it?
Because you and Rob are having a completely different conversation than what the video is talking about. Nowhere in the video does he say "Work 400 hours a day, desert your wife and kids, don't enjoy life until you're old" Yet that's what you guys seem to think it's saying.Bush4Ever wrote:I wasn't really referring to the video, but I have seen it once.
