this seems to have come from the top. I doubt the nets wanted to sign him. The league office probably forced this on the Nets. Heck, the Nets could have easily gotten a big man from its D league affiliate.

There's no question in my mind this was merely a publicity stunt to get people to pay attention to them. Look at the facts - they lost their starting center over two months ago, and prior to signing Collins already had three guys 6'10" and taller able to play the center slot. And you're right about the D-League callup - they have a 6'10" guy down there doing 13pts & 8rebs. Why not give him a chance instead?

They figured it was hipster brooklyn..already a soft identity and the desperation to be frontrunners and make noise but the inability to do so..
So they sign collins and hype it like its the signing of Jackie Robinson and they are breaking boundaries.and even staged a photo session so it will someday become a classic historical picture...its a bushleague move just like Kidd as head coach was a bushleague move...
Lets see if Collins can produce...lets see if they extend his ten day contract and what its baeed on if they do
