and slavery in Exodus and Leviticus must be understood within the ancient near Eastern context, where slavery was a widespread institution. The Bible's regulations shouldbe seen as a way to mitigate the harshness of it all and introduced a more humane treatment compared to the surrounding cultures at that time. there was a moral evolving that had to be done, too. couldn't be all at once.
