Ralph Sampson... Wemby before Wemby

Post by thedangerouskitchen »

7'4 like Wemby, 228 (bigger than Wemby)... 21/11/2/1/2.5 on .523% as a Rookie, against much tougher Big Man competition than Wemby, who averaged very similar Rookie numbers (21/11/4/1/3.6 on .465%).

Sampson could have been one of the greats. Wemby at barely 200 pounds wouldn't last 2 years with the rules and the physicality in the paint the way it was in the 80's / 90's, but fortunately for Wemby, he plays in a zero-contact Era... so hopefully he'll be able to stay healthy (unlike Samson).

Wemby plays against skilled forwards and big men. Sampson played against guys who had no idea how to play basketball and were on the court to be Kimbo Slice style enforcers throwing clotheslines like Big Show

Yeah... here's some of those scrub Bigs in the league before Sampson got injured: (in no order):

Jabbar
Moses
Parish
McHale
Sikma
Gilmore
Cartwright
Laimbeer
Nance
Barkley
Rollins
Eaton
Walton
Hot Rod Williams
Willis
Jones
Chambers
Ewing
Oakley
Malone
Rodman
Daugherty
Green
Thorpe
Carr

Probably a lot more I'm forgetting... scrubs, used-car salesmen and plumbers.

Half that list would be bench players today.

The most you can stretch Sampson as being a quality big of note is 1984 through 1987.

Cartwright-Injured for the majority of this span
Rollins-Averaged 7 and 7 in this span (although yes, good defense)
Eaton-Averaged 8 and 7 in this span (although yes, great defense)
Walton-Had one real season in this span (1986), as a backup.
Hot Rod Williams-Played one year in this span, averaged 15 and 8
Willis-Averaged 13 and 9 in this span
Jones-I'm assuming this is Caldwell Jones. In which, case...wow.
Oakley-Only played two years in this span.
Malone-Only played two years in this span (rookie+2nd year), averaging 18 a game
Rodman-Played one year in this span, averaged 7 and 4
Daugherty-Played one year in this span, averaged 16 and 8
Green-Averaged 9 and 6 in this span
Thorpe-Averaged 14 and 8 in this span
Carr-Averaged less than 7 points a game in this span

*Slight* resume padding there TDK.

A huge chunk of those guys are PFs who would get eaten alive trying to guard Wemby. A chunk more are guys who never ventured more than 10 feet away from the bucket and would get killed trying to guard out to the arc on the screen and roll.

That isn't fair or accurate. Is he a world beater right now. No. But he is a long way from being a finished product. The skill set is pretty darn close to unique. If he stays healthy, as he develops his offensive game (way behind his defense at this point), he will become dominant.

Did you think you made some kind of point making a long list of lumbering "enforcers" with limited basketball skills and high-level elbow throwing/boxing out/tough guy skills?

Imagine listing career 9.3ppg oft-injured Antoine Carr thinking it helps state your case.

If he could get a roster spot in today's NBA, he's at the end of the bench.

Ayton
Wemby
Holmgren

BTW Sampson's career high in blocks per game was 2.4, never once led the league, nor finished anywhere close to 2nd in DPOY voting.

Anthony Mason made 3rd team all NBA in 1997. He finished 9th in MVP voting that year. IF he could make a roster today, he's near the end of the bench.

Now let's look at the Big Men Wemby goes up against every night.

Are you freakin' kidding me?!?! Over 200 C and PF on just 30 teams... talk about a watered-down garbage league full of has-beens, never was's, and bench warming scrubs! Wemby should have averaged 35 a game against these bums!
