So you don't think that Bill Russell if he started to play organized basketball in 2010 would not have the offensive skills of todays players. Or the conditioning.

Of course he'd be one of the most valuable players in the NBA. This is a guy that won 5 MVPs in the same era that Wilt existed (who only won 4 MVPs). He'd be a multiple MVP winner in today's NBA.
Riiiiight... so a C who weighed 215 pounds soaking wet playing in (arguably) the weakest Era in NBA history, with no handles, couldn't dribble, no jump shot, and never had to defend the perimeter would be the best / most valuable player in the "supposed" biggest, baddest, most highly skilled and talented Era ever where, in order to thrive today (according to you / others) you MUST be able to shoot the ball, dribble real fancy, and defend the deep perimeter 90% of the time.

Did I get that right?

:noidea:

PS: TDK chuckles at your bush-league level trolling.

You mean a similar size to a Pippen or a Rodman?
No one claims Rodman would be the best / most valuable player in today's NBA, even though his game was VERY close to Russell's. Pippen didn't play C/PF, and (unlike Russell) Scottie could dribble, defend the perimeter, and shoot much better than Russell.

Let's be real: The truth is Bill Russell would be a role-player in today's NBA.

Always hilarious seeing the BWGC stumble and stammer when the same arguments they use about the 90s gets applied to 60s and their adoration of Bill Russell whose main opponents were actual plumbers and garbage men because that was their legitimate off season jobs.

Buh Buh Buh, it’s DIFFERENT for REASONS

You can tell how great a player is all-time by how ridiculously TDK trolls against them, sine his ultimate objective is to protect Michael Jordan (the man who laughs at TDK-like people in the privacy of his home) and his legacy from any sort of meaningful challenge.

That's why on the ESPN boards, he used to treat Kobe like he currently treats Lebron and treated Lebron like he currently treats Kobe from a narrative perspective. It flipped when it became obvious Kobe was not going to quite pose a reasonable challenge to Jordan, but Lebron was rapidly rising.

The closer the player is to Jordan, the more he trolls against them. The more distant the legend is (i.e.--a legend, but not one that seriously challenges Jordan), is the degree to which TDK fakes respect in order to appear "reasonable".

It's kinda sick, tbh.

Hard to say because Russell didn't show much of anything in terms of being able to Score from beyond 3-5 feet from the basket. Is there any footage out there of him even attempting a jump shot? Closest I saw was his Free Throw shooting form... and it's pretty brutal (below).

Guess I'm saying is that Russell was so much of a low post/interior Defensive / Rebounding specialist that there is nothing to suggest he could develop into a servicable perimeter player. Plus, with interior Defense not a factor in today's game and Rebounding much more equally distributed, I honestly don't think he'd be cut out for today's NBA. The 80's and 90's sure, because the NBA was still a Big Man's league with a lot of the Scoring still being of the inside-out variety. But today, standing on the perimeter 90% of the time, and with probably 80% of the Offense coming from outside of 10-15 feet, it doesn't seem like this plays into Russ' strengths... which is why I think he'd be a role-player only today.

Yes we know bush-league.. Jordan (and all the stars of the 80's / 90's) wouldn't do nearly as well in today's era because they shot a couple percentages less (from 3-point range) as they do today; however 1950's/60's Bill Russell (who played 99% of the time at the rim/paint, had no jumper, no handles, and no dribbling ability) would be a Superstar / MVP today.

It's about how you warp his performance against peers in his era, not how he'd translate today.

Your game and strategy on this is really obvious, here and in other threads/board history.

Other people notice as well, by the way. They just don't say anything because none of this really matters.

And what if, Bill Russell develops the outside shot. Able to dribble.

Not sure what you're rambling on about... I have always given Russ props for his Defense and Rebounding. The question in the thread, however is whether "his game" would make it to today's NBA.

His game was interior Defense and Rebounding, so the answer is a clear AND emphatic "NO!". Russell had no handles, couldn't dribble, never guarded the perimeter, and could not shoot... and according to you / others, these are the skills needed to nake it in today's NBA.

Or does your criteria magically change depending on the player in question?

Well that changes things, sure... but you asked (in the thread title) whether Russell's "game" would make it today, and again, his game was interior Defense and interior Rebounding... so in that respect maybe he'd make it as a role-player coming off the bench, but not a starter and certainly not a superstar/MVP type (IMO anyway).

Nope, sorry, I don't.

This thread asks if Russell's game woul translate to today's NBA, and it absolutely would not... (ie; no handles, couldn't dribble, couldn't shoot the 3-ball, and never/rarely defended the perimeter).

Do you disagree simply because it's Bill Russell we're discussing (and not Jordan, or some other star from the 80's/90's)?

I already stated what I thought of the original question on the first page or so of this thread. I think my opinion is pretty reasonable, even if people disagree slightly.

That being said, the 80s/90s were MUCH closer to the 50s/60s (as illustrated in the FT percentage sidebar in the other thread) than they are to the 2020s or so.

Well obviously...

The 80's/90's NBA (like the 50s/60's) was a Big Man's game (ie; inside-outside as opposed to outside-in of today; teams actually played Defense - at least sometime during the 60's they started, and clearly the 80's/90's, etc.)... which is why Russell would flop if he played "his game" today, unlike most of the star C/PF of the 80's/90's, who could dribble, shoot from 15 feet in, had great footwork, and defended the perimeter (none of which Russell could do).

Um, yeah sure... except you're wrong.

100% wrong.

Just because Silver, Dumars, Gobert, Luka, Kerr, Trae Young, Rivers, and other current players/coaches/league exec's completely destroyed today's NBA fan with daming truths about the weak/soft nature of today's game/Defense doesn't mean you have to resort to lies.

The 50's/60's shot FT's underhanded, they shot 38%-42% from the field (on average), couldn't dribble with their left (off) hand, couldn't dunk, couldn't shoot beyond 10-15 feet, etc. etc.

Walk this one off, bush.
