Ok I just HAD to do it... last night I broke down and watched 1.5 Quarters of the OKC/SA game

I just had to see what all the hype is about... and whether, perhaps, the players today truly are "bigger, better, badder, etc".

Sure, 1.5 Quarters isn't a huge sample size BUT what I quickly discovered is the fact that ANYONE who claims there is tough, solid, consistent hard-nosed Defense played in today's NBA quite simply has never watched the NBA during the late 80's - 00's "or" they are living in denial.

Now okay, it 's not like the defenders were just standing around like tree stumps (ie; like LeBron the past 10 years or so) BUT the effort was soooooo casual / nonchalant that it quickly became obvious why there's been such an Offensive explosion during this era: Virtually no lock-down, on-ball Defense due in large part to the rules in place (ie; zero-contact on the perimeter) and virtually zero resistence at the rim/paint, which clearly explains the ultra high FG%/TS% these days.

Also... on Offense these guys were traveling CONSTANTLY, while routinely using their off-arms to clear-out the defenders. Not one whistle was blown.

So yeah, there is no question it's easier to score in this era than ever before! This is not even debatable.

Now on the flidside, I did see some AWESOME young talent in Wemby and Chet, and a few others whose names escape me (Wemby looks like he's got GOAT-level potential!!)... but overall, to a man, I wasn't impressed. Waaaaaaay too much premature 3-point-chucking coupled with soft, casual Defense for my taste BUT I can see why some fans love the game today.

Still... for my money the late 80's - early 90's was (by far) the greatest era of NBA basketball I've ever seen... and what I watched last night certainly isn't going to change my mind.

You love the NBA and were never gonna follow through on your boycott. Just appreciate the GOAT era while it’s still happening.

It's the God's honest truth... I stopped watching Basketball, Football and Baseball in late 2019, and have yet to watch a game since. In fact, just this past weekend I got the itch to check out the NFL Playoffs.. it dawned on me that I have been supressing part of what being a man is all about for so long (ie; SPORTS!) that I almost... alllllllmost tuned in to the Chiefs/Bills game.

But I stuck to my guns.

Last night i was channel surfing and came across the OKC/SA game right when they were showing a Wemby highlight. I decided (based on the hype over the kid) to watch the middle of the 3rd quarter and part of the 4th.

I don't foresee I'll be watching any more games any time soon...

People who actually played the game of basketball themselves *and* are emotionally healthy know the current era is the best, and most talented era of basketball in NBA history.

People who didn't play basketball themselves *or* have some sort of mental/emotional disturbance choose an older era.

It really is that simple, unfortunately.

Nowadays all you have to do to make it in the NBA is shoot... and 40% of the shots are 3-pointers.

Gone is the strong, physical Defense, the rim protectors, the intense rivalries, the Rebounding and 3-point shooting "specialists", the post-up and mid-range games, etc. Gone is the need for versatility... the ability to play in a slow, half-court, grind-it-out physical game today followed by a fast-paced, run-gun finesse style tomorrow. Yesterday's stars/players were so much more fundamentally sound and versatile... and the game was unpredictable and exciting because you never knew what you were going to get.

The NBA overall today is predicatable and boring (unless you care about fancy dribbling followed by chucking up 25 foot bombs while MISSING 65% of the time).

Late 80's - early 90's NBA was exceptionally exciting. What I watched last night was a snooze-fest... after a handful of possessions from either team I witnessed all there is to see from the game today: Run the ball up court facing zero defense, a couple passes around the perimeter followed by a long-range chuck-shot and (much more often than not) a looooooong karooming defensive Rebound after which the opposing team would do the extact same.

Boooooooring!

Yes, as opposed to the incredible viewing experience of watching the star player go ISO in the high post for 23 seconds before launching a 20 ft fadeaway two.

I stopped watching sports simply because my other hobbies are more fun, I still watch hockey and sometimes baseball but that's about it. The NBA has been a bad product for a long time now, it's nearly unwatchable now. Constant whistles and stoppages, dumb 3 ball chucking, not many respectable, interesting athletes, no defense, probably bc low IQ NBA fans think it's boring, it's turned into corporate woke dog shit.

So TDK supports BLM now? I didn't see that one coming.

The thunder lead the league by a wide margin in drives per game, their entire offensive identity is having five ball handlers on the court at all times. If you’re claiming they just passed the ball around the perimeter, you obviously didn’t watch the game

Why do so many boomers pretend "being old" is the same as "good fundamentals"?

Weird ego-protection to hide the fact the old school *couldn't* do the same things the new school can do, like there has to be some sort of equalization between eras.

No...sometimes the other side is simply as good or better than you at everything.

Boomers really should learn that lesson. It applies to more things than basketball, too.

As much as I've been critical on today's game, there's no question about the level of skill and athleticism being far superior now than ever in league history.
