Vince Carter Officially Retired

Post by Bush4Ever. »

Interesting career.

I think he underperformed relative to expectations early and mid-career (that were probably unfairly high, to be fair), but had more productivity at the more advanced ages of his career than I would have initially guessed.

Basketball reference puts his HOF probability at 95 percent. Probably first-ballot.

Being a stand up dude in the NBA. From what I've heard, he was an amazing locker room guy who really helped the younger guys along.

I think that deserves some thanks.

Seemed like a decent guy. He also had the most amazing dunk ever, over that 7'2" Frenchman in the Olympics.

I might concede he BECAME a stand-up guy and a valued veteran as he grew older.

But his antics in Toronto, quitting on that team and city, shouldn't be forgotten entirely. He and Alonzo Mourning both get too many free passes for that nonsense.

So a player in a 22 year span grew up and matured?

I don't think the fact that he quit on a team early in his career should prevent him from being thanked for his time spent in the league.

Maybe they should have put an asterisk on the bottom of that thank you that said, "Except for those years you were a real jerk. We don't thank you for that."

It felt like he was on the verge of retirement and old for the past 10 years. Last time he was relevant was on the Nets.

I just think it should be acknowledged instead of the blanket "he was a great guy" stuff. I mean it's not like he was a young impressionable rookie either. He was 28 years old when that stuff went down.

Mourning was 33 when he was petulant with New Jersey and Toronto.

Mourning probably gets a free pass due to his kidney thing back then.

I remember watching the game when he dunked on Mourning and thinking, wow, Vince still has some juice in those legs. He played for an additional 15 years after that dunk.

Definitely.

"It's ok that he quit on TWO teams... and was a complete dink about it... in a very self-serving way... because he used to be sick."
