How many players are there who are/were great in each facet of the game?

Talk about anything here.

How many players are there who are/were great in each facet of the game?

Post by FPL »

After posting in the Dirk/Barkley thread about how few all-timers there are who are very well-rounded, I figure we could break this down to a minimum of six categories:

Volume Scoring
Shooting
Ball-Handling
Passing
Defense
Rebounding

Are any players ever elite in all six? I think even with GOATs, guys are going to have a weaker category. You can grade guys today or all-time and however you want, I'm using a scale of: Poor-Below Average-Average-Above Average-Great-Elite-All-Timer

Some examples:

Bird:
Volume Scoring - Elite
Shooting - All-Timer
Ball-Handling - Average
Passing - All-Timer
Defense - Above Average
Rebounding - Great

Dirk:
Volume Scoring - Great
Shooting - All-Timer
Ball-Handling - Below Average
Passing - Below Average
Defense - Poor
Rebounding - Above Average

Magic:
Volume Scoring - Great
Shooting - Above Average
Ball-Handling - All-Timer
Passing - All-Timer
Defense - Average
Rebounding - Great

I assume the scores are being scaled relative to position.

Jordan
Volume Scoring - All-Time
Shooting - Elite (mid-range)
Ball-Handling - Elite (note the low turnover percentage)
Passing - Above-average (but barely)
Defense - Elite
Rebounding - Above Average

Duncan
Volume Scoring - Great
Shooting - Above-average
Ball-Handling - Average
Passing - Average
Defense - All-Time
Rebounding - Great

Edit: Hitting the "great" mark for all those categories would be tough. The amount of people who lack a category of average or worse is probably relatively sparse as well.

Yeah I think I had relative to position in mind. Though then I guess maybe I should be more generous with ball-handling? idk

BTW this is the kind of distribution I had in mind I guess since those terms are a bit fuzzy:

Poor- bottom 20%
Below Average- second 20%
Average- middle 20%
Above Average-next 20%
Great-most of the top 20% in the league
Elite-league leaders
All-Timer-GOAT or in the discussion

I guess Oscar Robertson might come closest, but it's hard to tell without extensive data or footage.

KG and Pippen seem like decent choices but I don't think either is a 'great' scorer per se (maybe Scottie misses on rebounds too).

MJ comes closest on all six.

How was Oscar on defense? Very few awards but not sure they had them in his years.

Yeah they had the All-Defensive teams starting in 68-69 and Oscar didn't make any, though that's a bit after his prime.

I'd say Duncan's passing was above average.
