I've never been fired.

I'm impressed you don't complain about your neighborhood.

Why can't NY suburbs get more pronouncable names? Jesus Christ.

IIRC, they are derived from Indian names.
Taking a break from the board. Please reference my last post for more details if you are interested.

My nephew is serving his mission in Iowa right now. He started off in Ankeny.

It's a nice area. I prefer West Des Moines in terms of Des Moines suburbs but I'd rank Ankeny as #2.

Is it a common thing in Des Moines suburbs to have shared backyards like this?

That happens in Utah a lot. Fences are expensive.

Interesting how time/history changes viewpoints on this. 40 or 50 years ago... fences were frowned upon.

In fact, in our old neighborhood, the parents on the block pooled money to build a sidewalk that spanned across about 5 houses so whether the kids were out there playing ball or riding bikes... they were contained in an area where multiple moms could check on them at any time.

That was in the 1960s or maybe 1970s. By the time we moved in, EVERY house had a fence and we had to explain to everybody who came over why we had a sidewalk running through the back of the yard.

[Note: I prefer the 1960s version, even if it's less practical today. For example, I would no longer have a dog.]

I have a hard time believing fences were ever frowned upon.

You might be right. I guess I shouldn't speak for homeowners from previous generations.

Maybe I used a poor choice of words.

[Note: To be fair though, some homeowners associations do restrict them, even today. For example, my sister and her family are unable to build a fence in their neighborhood. Nor their previous neighborhood.]

Only reason I say that is because my grandmother, in Scotia, NY, has had a fence since right around that time, as does everyone in her neighborhood.
