Smart is the piece of shit. Orr called him a piece of crap and he chimped out and attacked him, then he lies and claims Orr called him a n*gger to try and justify attacking him. Shameful. The little thug deserves longer than a 3 game ban.
First off, he's a college kid, not an NBA player. He's not a pro and not getting paid millions of dollars to perform.

Secondly, I abhor the train of thought that if I buy a ticket, I have the right to be a complete jerk and disrespect players in a personal way. That's garbage. He's the adult and should have acted like one. Does it excuse the reply - no. But I am more than good with 3 guys, in fact, I think it's a little harsh. The fan should be incredibly embarrassed.

Marcus wasn't smart even though there are conflicting reports about what was said. The fan has said that he is not going to any more Texas Tech games. The fan who is an air traffic controller should be ashamed of himself though being a grown man in his mid 40s verbally abusing a teenager. If he would do this at his job he would be fired.

It makes me laugh when people call others out when many of them know that they wouldn't do it if the 2 were alone somewhere without any help or without any witnesses around. So in most cases this doesn't happen so it's just better to suck it up or go back at them verbally but Smart probably would have gotten in trouble for that also.

This incident shouldn't affect Smart's draft status.
Here's Orr at another game in 2010.

There will always be heckling. If he's too mentally weak to handle being called a piece of crap then he'll never make it in the NBA. He'd be called worse things on the bus.

Crying racism when the man said nothing racist is the worst crime in all of this, not the push or the piece of crap taunt.

Sorry, but no free pass for smart, espeically if all he said was "peice of crap"

Smart is in no way a kid. He is an adult. When i was his age, i was serving my country, and in no way a kid. If he can't handle a little trash talk from fans, then he needs to give up his free ride to college, and give up his dream of making millions in the NBA.

It shows his character when he automatically pulls the race card. The guy is a loser.

I don't think I said he merited a free pass. I said I was more than good with 3 games, and in fact would have only given him 1 or 2 myself. Fact is, he is just in college and not getting paid. I also have a real issue where it is culturally acceptable for fans because they buy a ticket to act like pompous boors, especially towards college kids. I just read that the fan has agreed to not attend anymore games this season. I commend him for that. At least he is sufficiently embarrassed to know he has to share in the blame for this.

I agree with a lot of both sides. I think you are complete asshole if you go to college basketball games and heckle the players, just like Grizz said, but I support a person's right to be a complete asshole as it is protected by our first amendment. I also think that Smart was completely in the wrong by pushing the man. I don't care what he said, you don't have the right to shove him. Like I said earlier, if it were the other way around, Orr would be in jail. I agree with Da Stars about the "sticks and stones" rule, especially at a sporting event. Still doesn't make Orr any less of an asshole, though. I agree with Smelters that he's a POS for developing the hobby of taunting college athletes.

It would not surprise me at all if Orr did call him a n*****. Of course he'd deny being a racist, not wanting it to hurt his career or social status. But like I said before, it doesn't excuse Smart's actions.

Fans talking shit at college basketball games didnt just start happening this week.

The "fan" in question is simply trying to help diffuse the situation. He did absolutely nothing wrong.

Well, we will just agree to disagree. I think the fan did plenty wrong. Obviously, you feel pretty strongly in your views, and I feel pretty strongly in mine.

It seems that some people can't understand that just because something has been happening for a very long time doesn't mean it's not wrong. There is something really wrong with getting pleasure out of taunting college kids. Dude needs to get a life and seriously reflect. I'm glad he's not going to games anymore. I'm sure he ruins the experience for lots of people around him.

Also, just because you have the "right" to do it doesn't make it right. You have the right to be an asshole, but that means you are still an asshole and people have the right to call you what you are.

This thread makes me realize not many of our members have played organized sports.

When you're on the road, people are going to run their mouths. It happens. I've had grown men shit talk to me as early as 7th grade.

Thicken that skins, bitches.

Maybe Canadians are more civilized. I played high school hoops and hockey up to midget level in a hockey crazed town and while fans would get boisterous, it was never personal. I saw a little more of that as a parent with my kids. But like Ghostown said, just because you have the right to be an asshole doesn't change the fact that you're an asshole.

LOL, you guys seem to want to rewrite history. In pretty much every sport in every country in the world, fans talk shit, scream, yell, taunt the other team, etc. etc.

It has always been this way. I would be willing to bet you that players on teams all over the country have heard much harsher things than smart just heard. the guy lost his cool because the team hasn't been doing well, and he has been getting roasted in the media. He isn't handling it well, and he took it out on a fan. The reality is, even Smart himself knew he fucked up, so he pulled the race to try and save face.
I just have to laugh whe people all of sudden act holier than thou at fans. All we hear about are the "12th man" and how important they are etc, etc.

I was going to mention the something about Canadians being nicer.

I'm not saying they're not assholes, but if someone like me routinely heard trash from the fans, imagine how much a guy like Smart has heard.

I don't care what anyone says, you do not have the right to put your hands on them.

I don't think anyone completely condones what he did. Although I do think a lot of the reaction is over the top. I'm just of the view that 3 games, if anything, is a lot. There are extenuating circumstances. I also hate how people just assume they would react differently under similar circumstances. I'm one of the those guys that tries very hard not to be too judgmental because for the most part, unless you actually are in someone's shoes, it's brutally difficult to say how you would react. It's very easy to think how you would react, but those two things are as different as chalk and cheese.
