Not. It was a well-known criticism of Malone... warranted or not.

I have Malone at #13. He was good. He posted some awesome stats. But was he a guy you did everything you could to build around and give the keys to...?

He won 3 (regular season) MVPs and took a .500ish team to the Finals.

That said, I'm sort of rethinking my selection a bit. I see your point (and I might agree with FPLii that his defensive non-dominance drops him)

I should probably formalize my mental schema about how I evaluate players.

I might be overrating the "how he did relative to his peers" aspect a bit. I'm sure I would not rate him that highly independent on those MVPs.

The "how he did relative to his peers" is very useful, but also can be a slippery slope. Obviously being the best is most important. But different players play in different eras, which makes being the best very competitive.

Take Patrick Ewing for example. Great player who put up great stats was the face of that franchise for over a decade. He was on the level of Olajuwon, Barkley and Shaq in the 90s. He's far short on accolades basically from playing in the Jordan era, which also was Top heavy at the center position. Dude gets overlooked by so many ppl.

To be honest, that heuristic becomes more important to consider when the players you are comparing are more removed in terms of eras, for example 60s vs. 00s, when direct evaluation of skills and abilities and statistics becomes confounded as a function of time.

The degree to which time confounds those things is the degree to which it's important.

And yes, you do need to analyze the relative strengths of position alongside it. I don't disagree with any of that.

I would disagree with rating Ewing on the level of Hakeem or even D-Rob/90s Shaq, but that might be a discussion we have in this rating thing later on...
