I have lived in NC for over 50 years. I was born somewhere else, and have lived in NC ever since…by choice.
There are suckier states that I have lived in. Such as Kansas and Montana. As backwards as you might think NC to be, you have no. Fucking. Idea. About relative backwardness.
NC is presently undergoing a spasm of backwardness that coincides with the ascendance of Republicans in state government. These lackies have been awaiting their opportunity to relitigate the Civil War. With the recent capture of NC state government by these clueless tools, the election laws have been steadily marching backwards, to the times when only male, white landowners were allowed to vote.
There are other states even worse. Consider modern Pennsylvania.
Be careful who you denigrate.

I’m a North Carolina native. Half of my family is in the Lumbee region, which is the poorest area of NC, and the other half in the surrounding Charlotte region. I’ve seen much of what has gone on in NC since the 1980s.
There’s a lot to hate about North Carolina. Even if you have a great life here, there’s still the backwards government. Most of the hate on North Carolina is a result of having some of the highest inequality in the nation and the lowest economic mobility.
To put it simply, the working class industries in North Carolina have been destroyed over the past few decades. First, hog and chicken farming switched to illegal immigrant labor after NAFTA wrecked the Mexican economy in 1995 and caused Mexicans to flee to the US border. Second, a massive decline in smoking destroyed tobacco. Last, and the most destructive problem, China joining the WTO was the end of furniture, textiles, and cotton. The entire state was involved in those industries to some extent.
Along with that, NC pays corporations to move here. They’re ‘supposed’ to bring open jobs, but what they really do is import their entire workforce. This has caused a population explosion. Along with that, most of those people come from wealthy areas, such as Manhattan, and they’re bringing a lot of money but not spending it on anything that actually benefits locals. Often times, around Charlotte, those yuppies move into SC so that they can dodge NC taxes entirely.
So, the result is that local working class North Carolinians are mostly stuck with retail and food service as a job option, they can’t get a better job since some yuppie from Manhattan got imported to fill it, and that yuppie has caused prices to shoot up so that the locals can’t even afford to live anywhere near where they work.
Chances are, if you ask a millennial local, then the response will be hatred for NC since that group got screwed over more than any other. Usually the ones that praise NC are transplants, mostly due to coming from areas where they’ve been given ample opportunities and easily-acquired success, like middle-class NYC and SoCal. They’re entirely insulated to the problems that NC has. As Glen points out, there are worse states, but that doesn’t mean much. You can go into South Carolina and see that things can get worse, but it doesn’t change the fact that NC is terrible. It’s like saying that India isn’t that bad since Pakistan is worse.[/i][/b]
