Make no mistake, McHale was BY FAR the #2 option for the majority of his career. He also finished 4th in the MVP vote one season. Stockton never finished higher than 7th.

Tough call. To this day, McHale has the best set of low post scoring moves I have ever witnessed. He was a magician in the post. He was an excellent scorer and a very underrated overall player. The context of comparing him to Horry, albeit probably facetiously is beyond stupid. He had some very magical playoff moments.

It really comes down to a few things. The total body of work, primarily regular season, obviously favors Stockton. Historically significant playoff performances favor McHale. How much do you value each of those in how you assess players?

I tend to err towards overvaluing playoff performances and undervaluing regular season numbers but I get both cases.

I'll mull this over a while longer.

The latter is not equivalent to what Deez is saying though.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar missed the playoffs in consecutive years in his prime. Wilt Chamberlain, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and KG all missed the playoffs in their respective primes. It doesn't lessen their overall impact on the game and the individual impact that they had on their team's success. It just means that it wasn't enough to overcome better overall teams or unfavorable circumstances.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was even named league MVP and missed the playoffs. I'm quite sure that he was more impactful that year than Stockton in those last 3-4 years in Utah.
