Go is a youth drug romp with a nonlinear multiple storyline. That's about as late '90s as you can get. Good movie though.AbeVigodaLive wrote:Madnessssss wrote:awfulzombiesonics wrote:1999 was the GOAT year for movies.

Magnolia
Being John Malkovich
Three Kings
The Sixth Sense
Eyes Wide Shut
American Beauty
Go
The Insider
Actually, I've always thought "Go" was sort of a hidden gem. Then again, I haven't seen it in quite some time. But I USED to like it. Maybe it has aged poorly.
I used to think Doug Liman was a solid director. He's a big reason why I dig The Bourne Identity more than those that followed it.

Catastrophic for martial arts.
Here's where Bush rips Teen Wolf for being a travesty to the game of basketball.

No it really doesn't matter. Not 1 person looks at martial arts in a way because of that movie.Bush4Ever wrote:It impacts among other things how well it ages.King Deez wrote:
Nobody really gave a fuck about it regarding martial arts. Pat Morita was the man.
The martial arts aspect looks silly as shit now, because it was built on a foundation of horseshit.
It's not a total deal-breaker, but it does matter.

I don't know that movie, but I doubt basketball was a central theme or building block in the way that Karate was in the Karate Kid for plot devices, character development, etc...AbeVigodaLive wrote:

Madness, I'd like to hear how The Insider was an "awful" movie. It was an intense real-life drama with powerhouse acting performances.
Re: Damn, Some Great Movies in 95
To be frank, this is preposterous.King Deez wrote: No it really doesn't matter. Not 1 person looks at martial arts in a way because of that movie.
You probably don't have a historic understanding of martial arts, which is fine. But you are 100 percent wrong on that point.

you are quite incorrect still Bush. Do you think that movie really has or had any affect on people in martial arts or what to expect from it?Bush4Ever wrote:To be frank, this is preposterous.King Deez wrote: No it really doesn't matter. 1. What the fuck is wrong with you? Go grab a VHS of the movie immediately and watch it.
2. Basketball is very important in it. It's not like they could just swap it out for boxing or something like that in a sequel and remake the movie. Dumby.

If you had a historic understanding of martial arts, you would know that.
There is a reason the "Gracie revolution" vis-a-vis MMA was so powerful. It overturned a lot of the silly, mystic shit associated with a lot of the martial arts in play and brought some level of authenticity to things.
"Crane kick, no can defense"
A 70 year old man beating multiple skilled 18 year old attackers.
All striking, no grappling
Learning balance by walking into the ocean. Learning (impractical) blocking by sanding a deck.
Martial arts success and skills being heavily correlated with "the ancient mystic wisdom and inner peace", which as we know by now...always takes the form of an Asian person. Because they are so calm and wise and everything.
So very stupid. If you see the usual strip club McDojo black belt idiot, 95 percent chance he has seen and internalized the Karate Kid.

Re: Damn, Some Great Movies in 95
Obviously it wouldn't be the same movie, but martial arts has a different sort of tenor to it as far as character development, learning lessons, etc...AbeVigodaLive wrote:

Mostly because it is a more intimate experience. Contrast missing a shot in basketball vs. getting punched in the face.

You have to have been born to be a child in the 80s to have an opinion about those movies? Do you think people are only allowed to have opinions about movies that were released when they were a child? You could argue that because I wasnt a child then, my opinion is less biased and more meaningful because I don't romanticize about those movies.
Re: Damn, Some Great Movies in 95
You are completely and totally wrong.King Deez wrote: lol, holy fuck Bush..... Nobody watched that movie thinking they are learning anything about martial arts.
Thankfully, the general attitude associated with the movie is starting to die out...but there are still some holdovers from the old mindset.
