Shaq was banged up fron 96-98 playing in 54, 51, and 60 games. His best rebounding season was his rookie season in which he averaged 13.9rpg.Kobeunderbite wrote:y2ktors wrote:From 1993-99, 7 seasons, Shaq only made 1 All-nba first team. That's the best competition that he had amongst his fellow peers at the position and he was only top center once.
Hell even the 1 season that he was first team, Hakeem Missed 35 Games and D-Rob was back but sharing the load with rookie Duncan and Ewing wad lost for the season in December of 1997.
Basically, I'm saying that his overall resume doesn't quite scream "Potential GOAT" to me.
To be fair to Shaquille, not only was he going up the toughest All-NBA competition ever at Center, but you're talking about a stretch when he was 21-26 years old, and certainly pre-prime. Additionally, I think that Shaquille certainly had a big case for 1st team in 1994-96, when you look at the statistics:
1994-95
Robinson: 27.6/10.8/2.9/3.3, 53%
O'Neal: 29.3/11.4/2.7/2.4, 58%
1995-96
Robinson: 25.0/12.2/3.0/3.3, 51%
O'Neal: 26.6/11.0/2.9/2.1, 57%
Now, obviously there are other variables to consider, but my point is to illustrate the fact that just because Shaquille only made 1 All-NBA 1st team in that stretch, does not mean that he was necessarily only the best C in the NBA for 1 of those seasons. There wasn't really a bad pick at Center in most of those years.

I'll definitely agree that the center position was highly competitive for sure in the 90s.... and for there to only be 3 spots instead of 6 like Gs and Fs makes it even harder to get a first team selection.Kobeunderbite wrote:y2ktors wrote:From 1993-99, 7 seasons, Shaq only made 1 All-nba first team. Hakeem was great. I used to have his old pinstripe jersey from the late 90s rockets as well as a Ewing knicks jersey and Webber Bullets one.y2ktors wrote:

Hakeem gets perpetually dissed all because Shaq has a few more rings. Nevermind Hakeem eclipses him in just about everything else.y2ktors wrote:

Hakeem Olajuwon's biggest blot on his resume is from what he couldn't control: The shit fest from 1987-92.Havlicekstealsit wrote:Hakeem gets perpetually dissed all because Shaq has a few more rings. Ownership and general management was terrible. Coaching was terrible. The bulk of his teammates were below average or flat out stunk, at least the ones who weren't suspended due to cocaine.
But I understand that ppl value rings the most so I'm ok with it. I personally take every player's situation into account, whether it be Kobe, Hakeem, Magic or Oscar.

Hakeem had a great peak from 93-97 but was it more impressive then Shaq's from 99-01? He did sweep Shaq in his first finals back in 95.y2ktors wrote:Hakeem Olajuwon's biggest blot on his resume is from what he couldn't control: The shit fest from 1987-92.Havlicekstealsit wrote:Hakeem gets perpetually dissed all because Shaq has a few more rings. This one can be finished now.
Time to get to the Olajuwon/Lebron debate.

Those two players have probably top 5 peaks of all time. Hard for me to pick one over the other, peak wise, without feeling Like I'm dissing the other.elmouse03 wrote:Hakeem had a great peak from 93-97 but was it more impressive then Shaq's from 99-01? To this day, Olajuwon is the only player to win DPOY, MVP and FMVP in the same season.
