You should be ashamed of yourself, and should have your Bulls fan card revoked.Titan18 wrote:As a Jordan jockey I can't believe I'm saying this but I can't see a clear cut argument for Bird>Kobe.
Kobe was the better scorer
Kobe was the better defender
Kobe won more
Bird was a better passer, rebounder, and all around leader with more intangibles. But is that enough to make it a clear cut Bird>Kobe?
Since Bird will easily win this round I just won't cast my vote. I feel dirty.

How do you figure Kobe was a better Scorer?

I got Duncan at 6th
Bird/Kobe tie at 7th
Duncan & Kobe got a much longevity career then bird.

Kobe averages 1 more PPG than Bird; however Larry was a far more Efficient Shooter AND he played in an era where they didn't call fouls on perimeter shooters like they do in this/Kobe's era... evidenced by the fact that Bird never averaged more than 6-FT Attempts in any one year (only 5 a game for his career), yet in this era you've got guys like Melo and Durant averaging twice as many FT Attempts taking the same shots Bird took.
Overall I'd say they were about even; however besides Jordan, there is only 1 player I think about (above ALL others) to take the final shot in Game 7 of the Finals... Larry Legend.
So what's your argument in favor of Kobe, again... and please don't say 81.

he wasn't a "far more Efficient Shooter", he was a forward who played closer to the basket.thedangerouskitchen wrote:Shill Jackson wrote:how do you figure he's not?thedangerouskitchen wrote:

Out of a 100 shots, he made four more. Big whoop. Compare their first 5 years of three pointers.
Fact is, Bird never took the final shot in a Game 7 of the Finals. If he's the only 1 player you think about, you're delusional.

Bird.....he didn't need to coattail with a league MVP like Kobe or Magic.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are dumber than that.

Oh, and it's not clear to me at all why Kobe is seen as the superior scorer, unless you making some sort of career/volume argument.
Kobe could reach a higher peak than Bird (when both were in and around their respective primes), simply as a result of volume and being able to go off the dribble a bit more easily, but Bird didn't really have the valleys Kobe did and was a more consistent shooter, all the while still putting up points in the mid to high 20s on average.
I'm not saying Bird was the superior scorer exactly, but I don't think there is much of an advantage either way on balance. It's closer to a wash than anything, IMO.
Edit: As far as the efficiency thing...seriously?
Bird was a routine 50/40/90 threat once Fitch left the Celtics and the team incorporated the three-pointer into the offense.
Kobe never came close to hitting any of those marks even once.
Kobe has an edge in volume, but Bird definitely has an edge in efficiency and pure shooting ability. The question is how you think the combinations play out. I personally think they basically cancel each other out.
