I actually interacted with Langan (briefly) on a math forum many, many years ago (he joined because someone had mentioned his cognitive-theoretic model of the universe).

He's pretty much the number one example of "huge (mental) horsepower that would be so much more powerful with discipline and direction" in my mind. Sort of like a pitcher throwing 105 MPH but walking everyone or a PG doing a crazy AND-1 move to get to the basket and then missing a wild layup.

That doesn't mean he's wrong about this though (I haven't read it, and he's definitely been right about some other things I've seen him comment on...sometimes wrong IMO).

His ego and autism (at least on the board I was on) was completely out of control though. He was basically what Artman would be here if Artman gained another 100 IQ points while maintaining his personality/autism.

I’m actually pretty sure I’d lose since I’ve never been a chess player and haven’t even attempted to play in over 30 years.
