I'm not one of those guys that throws out advanced metrics because there are outliers. Advanced metrics can be great tools.

But I just looked up Adrian Dantley. He has a a career PER of 21.5. Sounds awesome doesn't it. Well, having watched Dantley play his entire career, I can assure you he couldn't help you win jack shit. There are outliers to these numbers, and to me, Iverson and Dantley's numbers look far better on paper than how they translate onto the court. Dantley just didn't give a hoot about defense and cared more about getting his points and didn't really care about playing with his team. I see a bit of that in Iverson. Yes, he has some nice assist numbers, but for the most part, Iverson was about getting his shots up and passing was when there wasn't much of a shot to put up. It was a bit of a shame, because he obviously could really break down a defense. The defensive issues he caused his own team by being a SG in a PG's body are a whole other discussion.

I know Iverson is a bit of a sacred cow to some because of his 2001 run (which tends to be hugely overrated by the way) but I don't think he was a nearly as big a difference maker in the won/loss column as a guy should be at this point in the proceedings.

I remember when people used to like to shit on Kobe and would say that with Iverson they could have won just as much with Shaq. I think that's the height of lunacy, but then, different viewpoints is what makes a market.
You know, my biggest issues with Iverson have always been:

1. He shoots too much

2. He misses too much

3. He's a bad defensive player

Iverson didn't leave the NBA by choice. He and his style of play were forced out, just like Marbury and to an extent Francis. Those guys are 1 trick ponies at a position that requires much more than they were willing and/or able to provide.
Defense for point guards isn't that important.
One of the biggest lies of basketball. Not calling you a liar, stephen, but it's simply a :bullshit2: myth.

The Lakers seemed to do fine with Magic not playing defense.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are dumber than that.

It's very overrated especially now. Look at all the great defensive pg's today

Wall
Paul
Westbrook
Conley

None of them have done anything significant.

Warriors just won a title with an average at best defensive pg. Before that it was the Spurs winning with Parker at pg and the Heat with Chalmers at pg.

Lakers did fine with Magic and his no defense self. Who was the elite defensive pg for Jordan's bulls?

It's been proven throughout NBA history that having good defensive pg's isn't necessary to win titles let alone vital.

The Bulls DID have a good defensive PG in Harper, and then used Brown to guard PGs off the bench. What they didn't have was a great defensive center. They were an anomaly, with their perimeter defense being the strength of the team.

With any perimeter player, you're not asking them to be a 1 man defensive recking crew. Just be reliable and do your part in the defensive system. There's no exception for PGs.

Not being a great defensive player isn't the same as not playing defense.

Wasn't Isiah Thomas a pretty good defender?

I was under the impression that Isiah was considered more of a dirty defensive player than a good defensive player.

Well, I think Dumars and Rodman were pretty outstanding defensive players in their own right, even in the traditional sense.

The others might have been more limited so they had to rely on that sort of thing much more.
