Ethical question
Let's say you discovered the cure for cancer:A miracle drug which works in 100% of the cases. A pharmaceutical company offers you $100 billion dollar for the rights of the drug and they will be paying the $50 billion in taxes that you will owe the government.
Here is the catch. The pharmaceutical company will suppress the drug since it's more profitable to the cancer industry to not cure cancer. Because of this your cure will not ever be used by any cancer patient whatsoever.
What would you do? Take the $100 bill or try to get fda approval and sale for your drug. The latter runs the risk of getting you killed due to high corporate politics and espionage.

Bingo. While libertarian property rights that madness subscribes to sees selling the drug is a valid and reputable option, us Christians have a higher responsibility.

Your hypothetical scenario maybe reality. The medical field is just as bad as the dudes selling crack on the corner but they are allowed to do it more.AtiliusRegulus wrote:Let's say you discovered the cure for cancer:A miracle drug which works in 100% of the cases. Re: Ethical question
I would hope that I would resist the temptation of money. To be honest, the first person I'd go to for advice would be my dad (a retired minister) and second would be my pastor. I suspect both would encourage me to stick to my guns.

I can't say that I'm surprisedMadnessssss wrote:The right wing thing to do is take the money. Free market. Capitalism. Left wings would regulate and force the drug to be made available.

Christians understand that we are all broken sinners in need of a savior. We aren't superior at all. But we are grateful to the One who has forgiven us, and we try to express that gratitude through serving.Madnessssss wrote:Zuckerberg is a Jewish atheist and just pledged 99% of his wealth to be spent on good causes over his lifetime.
Christians act like they're morally superior, but they don't do shit but pray- which is free (and doesn't do anything)

Bill gates and warren buffet donate to abortion causes, climate change and population control; those things aren't real charities but murderous tyrannical enterprises. Warren Buffett donations to abortion causes and organizations like planned parenthood has caused the deaths of thousands of blacks

look at the 10 commandments. You fail miserably and indeed are in need of a savior whether you believe so or not.Madnessssss wrote:I'm not a broken sinner in need of a "savior". It is difficult to convince a person who believes that sin doesn't exist, that he is a sinner. But the redeeming power of Christ has overcome much worse; it can overcome Madness' unbelief as well.CleveTown™ wrote:look at the 10 commandments. Who cares about $100B when you'd be known as the man who cured cancer? You'd be a hero everywhere you went and beloved worldwide. Your name would go in the history books and your family would enjoy the prestige for generations. Plus, you know, you'd be saving millions of lives, keeping families together, preventing people from undergoing the horrible pain of having cancer, helping parents stay sane now that they don't have to watch their kids waste away, etc.
What the hell is money in light of all that?

Now that's an interesting point. The desire for adulation might be a bigger sin than greed.LakersNeedShaq wrote:Who cares about $100B when you'd be known as the man who cured cancer? The correct answer is to decline the money, then offer up the drug to a research group--university or industry--that you knew to be scrupulous. They could get the public glory, lives would be saved, and your integrity would remain intact.

Re: Ethical question
If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?LakersNeedShaq wrote:americaninfidel wrote:Now that's an interesting point. How would me getting credit for saving lives cost me my soul? If I created a cure for cancer, saved lives, and asked for nothing in return (but still received adulation), I'd be costing myself my soul? See, no offense dude, but that's why some religions weird me out.

It might not, you're right. But pride is a dangerous sin, and it preys on even the best of intentions. "Pride comes before a great fall," Paul says, and so it is.LakersNeedShaq wrote:americaninfidel wrote:If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
