Back on topic. OP - to prevent infection, here's something you can do:
If you have a S/O, insist they lend a hand. If solo, I recommend you grip your thumb and tug towards the tip of your thumb; it will take a few tugs. In 7-10 minutes this action will cause white puss to squirt out of the tip. After you have relieved your thumb of this milky mess, your thumb may go limp, but it, and the rest of your body, will be relieved and feel much better.
