Most dominant NBA force?

Post by PhutureDynasty »

In light of a debate between y2ktors and l3bron I decided to make this a poll.

What do you think?

I guess relative to his time you gotta go with Wilt. Guy did average 50ppg for a friggin' season. I know there's the old "the competition was weaker" argument, and that's true, but at the same time Wilt could only play who was in front of him. Of course, Shaq would've been unstoppable back then too, don't misunderstand me. But Shaq never even averaged 30ppg once in his career, while plenty of other players have. Wilt just seemed like a better athlete, but I'm only basing that off of clips, I obviously didn't grow up watching him play. But I know he averaged 48.5 fuckin' minutes once, you think Shaq had the endurance for that? I don't.

I'm inclined to say Wilt, but he admittedly played more of a finesse game (until 66-67, most of his shots were either finger rolls or fadeaways). He played more of a power game thereafter, but by the time he got to peak Shaq's size, he was past him prime (he was close to 300lbs from 63-64 on, but didn't get much bigger, approaching that Shaq realm, until the end of his career). Wilt had superior upper-body strength, while Shaq had better lower-body strength.

Tough call.

I don't know how you can argue against 50ppg and 27rpg for a season. That's just downright embarrassing. We shit now whenever someone scores 50 or grabs 20 boards. Wilt did it for a whole damn season. Competition and pace aside, those numbers are staggering. Nobody else was able to do it. Elgin Bayor came close with a 38 & 19 season - and that year he only played half the time, the rest of the time he was in the Army reserves.

Wilt once spoke on this. He knocked Shaq for barreling over guys. He believed that it was an offensive foul. He believed in "skillful" scoring.

But let us not get too caught up in offensive #s. Defensively, Wilt was a beast as well. Shaq was far from a defensive stud.

Some people have put Wilt ahead of Russell in terms of defense.

It's absolute stupidity to compare raw stats from a league 40 years apart. You can't put "competition and pace" aside, that's nonsense.

Russell gets the edge because Wilt never had to guard himself.

You get what I'm saying?

When the stats are that overwhelmingly dominant in a player's favor you give them their dues.

Wilt is on a level by himself. No one has or will ever come close to the bulk of his records. It is what it is.

Regular season - Wilt
Playoffs - Shaq

Wilt gagged his bag off and then blamed everyone but himself.

Shaq was the most dominant Big Man post merger, Wilt pre merger...
"Today's NBA is soft, the Defense is weak, and the rules 'really' favor the Offense."

"Lebron doesn’t guard for a full game and our game plan was to get him to play defense and he left me open all game."
