What rules changes would improve the dunk contest?

Post by Ghostown42 »

The dunk contest sucks now more than it did in 1997 when they decided not to discontinue it. What do you think needs to be done to bring the dunk contest back to the exciting event that it was in the 80s? Here's some things that I think would help:

1. Only 1 replacement dunk allowed per attempt. I'm sick of seeing guys try to do gimmicky stuff and taking over a minute and 45 seconds to do it.

2. No props. It turns the contest into a gimmick.

3. Bring back judges. Having fans decide the winner is too predictable.

4. Make it a serious event. Right now, the dunk contest is seen as a joke. Back in the 80s, players took it seriously, and it was considered an honor to be in the dunk contest. When they started having contestants like Chris Jackson, Brent Barry, Darrell Armstrong, etc. you knew it was turning into a joke.

5. Get Kenny Smith away from all microphones.

..I think it is a lost aspect of the NBA at this point and will stay a gimmicky lackluster event...the players that should be entering, don't, and that's what the people want to see...that is just how the NBA is now, players don't care what the fans want, just what happens with them....

..I commend those that do partake in this event though knowing they are not who fans really want to see, but at least they have the balls to try...

Two attempts maximum. When you watch highlights of just the dunks of last year's contest, you see that there were some pretty impressive dunks. The problem was that the momentum was gone because you had to watch them attempt those dunks 10-12 times before they got it down.

Play devils advocate just a little though, players will have less impressive dunks if they know they only get 2 attempts though. We will just see the same old things over and over each year and that will get stale too.

*Crap. how do you put a youtube video on this site?

While writing your post, click on the "youtube" button. Between the signs, place the following set of letters, and the youtube video will be embedded:

Stop jumping over props and wearing costumes. It's a DUNK contest, not a flair contest.

If you don't complete a dunk you get kicked in the dick by Wade.

They should have just ended it in 2000. That was the last good one. Ive been saying for YEARS, they should ditch the contest and go for HORSE or 3 on 3. (preferably with the old legends vs. the top guys today)

Magic, Jordan, Bird vs. Kobe, Lebron, Durant?? That would sell out instantly
