Hoping for a Subject Area Teaching Change Next Year

Post by swampgator »

I'm looking to change my subject teaching area to one that I have a passion for (World Geography) from one that I have taught for many years (ELA) that I'm skilled in but have a diminishing desire to continue doing. The school is considering my request for a change. Let's hope that things work out.

It's a little late in the game of life to do that, wishbone. I have been a career teacher for going on 20 years now. I jumped ship from a corporate job to do this. Teaching is a career that I enjoy (just looking for a subject area change).

I appreciate that you want to switch to something you have more passion for. We’ve all had teachers who weren’t passionate and just copied lesson plans and never enriched our lives. I wish you the best of luck and are able to make a difference and be that teacher that the kids will always remember inspiring them

Thanks, wfc, It's not that I haven't been passionate in teaching ELA, I really believe that I have given my best to my students in the subject. I'm just at a point where geography is what I really want to teach. I have nearly as many university credits in geography as English, it was my favorite subject while learning, and I have spent time in many places (particularly Asia) to qualify me for the change.

They might fire you just for asking. Just trying to set your expectations.

That is a possibility, leoss.

I doubt it though since I was asked by the school leader today to coordinate and lead the summer enrichment program across all levels for the school.

They're probably thinking you let that minor responsibility go to your head. They'll fire you to avoid a "if you give a mouse a cookie..." type scenario.

Are you familiar with that story?

The entire story is about a boy named Oliver who gives a cookie to a mouse named Bruce. The mouse asks for a glass of milk. He then requests a straw (to drink the milk), a mirror (to avoid a milk mustache), nail scissors (to trim his hair in the mirror), and a broom (to sweep up his hair trimmings). Next he wants to take a nap, have a story read to him, draw a picture, and hang the drawing on the refrigerator. Looking at the refrigerator makes him thirsty, so the mouse asks for a glass of milk. The circle is complete when he wants a cookie to go with it.

You should honestly go in on Monday with your tail between your legs and let him know you changed your mind and that you are sorry for wasting his time.

Cool story, bro. I'm not worried about losing my job. The headmaster is actually looking to restructure standards taught in middle school based on my request, and the social studies department along with the headmaster will meet on Monday to discuss.

Hey swampgator.

Good for you. I hope it comes to fruition. Teaching, when properly motivated with the right individual is a truly noble career.
