Pretty much every single serious qualitative and quantitative analysis has graded Kobe as approximately an average defensive player in his career, with a handful of really good and really bad defensive seasons.



And there is a lot more data on this topic. But they all point to the same basic idea:

Roughly average on total.

A quick and dirty way to understand how much both Kobe and Lebron's defense contributed to "lift" is to subtract the offensive contribution to "CORP" for both Kobe and Lebron. That ends as such:

Kobe (Career):
Total CORP: 2.06
Offensive contribution: 1.90
So...defensive contribution = 0.16

Lebron (circa 2017 I believe):
Total CORP: 2.79
Offensive contribution: 1.84
So...defensive contribution = 0.95
