Re: Still kicking the tires on a PhD
A lot of valuable insight here, thank you my friends.
Can you expand on this? I already have my Masters, I want the PhD for the prestige and so that I can teach at least part-time.Bush4Ever35 wrote:It depends greatly on the specifics, unfortunately.
In general, if you are an established and handsome professional with (I'm assuming) secret Jewish connections, there is probably some benefit to getting a masters (you can adjunct with a masters), but probably not utility to getting a PhD, all things considered.

You may be right, although it would be if I could get some sort of inside track to tenure.Thedictator wrote:It's not worth the investment...

Re: Still kicking the tires on a PhD
This seems like a rather odd, obscure, yet self-aggrandizing type of question to ask this board.
I'd think a guy as esteemed and renowned in his field as Undies would be smart enough to know if the extra degree was worth it... vs... opinions from strangers who don't even know what Undies does for a living, where he lives, et al.
But alas. It's the Internet.

Only when the threads are this transparent.
It always gets a little cringy when you pull something like this out of your ass every few months.

You just don't understand what makes a good thread. You need to give my creations room to breathe before you come in here unleashing your smug farts everywhere.AbeVigodaLive wrote:Kobeunderbite wrote:Abe, unbutton that top button and lighten up. Re: Still kicking the tires on a PhD
You can adjunct many places with a masters degree (I did along the way). A PhD is not needed simply to teach.Kobeunderbite wrote:

The only real reason to do a PhD over and above a Masters is because you love research and really love the subject matter. Any PhD worth having is at least equivalent to a full-time job when you are doing it. When I was in, I always logged 40 hours a week, and generally in the 50-60 range...and some weeks 80.
Also, as a pro tip...a PhD will generally not offer more prestige than a masters degree and 5 good years of resume-building/wealth creation/networking, etc...
Once you hit a certain professional level, experience and tangible accomplishments become much more important than precisely how far you carried your education.

Some people might claim that a bit of disagreement between posters makes a good thread.
And me calling you out for this fake dilemma is just that.
You're welcome.

When the hell have I ever started a thread or even a side discussion about academia?AbeVigodaLive wrote:

He asked a question that I'm uniquely qualified to answer, so I answered it.

It's always so cringey to see Abe acting like he's got everyone pegged when he really doesn't.

Oh. My apologies, Bush.
I thought you worked in academia at some point... because you said you worked in academia at some point like 2,000 times.
But fortunately, Undies corrected this egregious mistake.

Abe is getting a PhD in smelling his own farts.
Re: Still kicking the tires on a PhD
Usually when someone is contemplating this decision (without being sure about their career direction) they are in a limbo professionally. Unsatisfied and angsty, and looking for another way.
