Crazy shit with Spain’s coaching situation, but still got them in the semis. Going with Germany to win it all. I can see France winning it all or self-destructing to an early exit. Argentina will need Messi to go into LeBron mode.

Probably a little late, but maybe we can submit group stage picks/predictions if enough people are in?

I always pull for one of Germany or Italy (since that's the bulk of my ancestry, as I assume that's how most people here pick non-US teams to follow), so with the latter out (as well as the US obviously when we're in), it's an easy choice.

I’m in. Although I may have to check out how many stars they have on FIFA 18 to properly assess some of them. :|

I'm down. On an outside site? Or do you/someone else wanna run it here? We could also predict leading goalscorer for the group stage.

I could put everything into a spreadsheet. Not sure if we should pick the result of every group stage game or predict the two teams that advance out of each group (and the order).

Picking each game might be a bit much, but your call. How about final points for each team (and teams advancing, in case of a tie)? Seems a good balance.

Sounds good. We can predict the order of finish for each group. I like the leading goalscorer tie-breaker option that you mentioned as well. Maybe we can go with a system where there's a max 10 points in each group, for a total of 80 points in the group stage:

2 points: Correctly picking the 1st place finisher
2 points: Correctly picking the 2nd place finisher
2 points: Correctly picking the two teams that advance from the group
2 points: Correctly picking the 1-2 order
1 point: Correctly picking the 3rd place finisher
1 point: Correctly picking the 4th place finisher

Group B Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Iran
Group C France, Denmark, Peru, Australia
Group D Argentina, Croatia, Nigeria, Iceland

Group F Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Switzerland
Group G Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama
Group H Senegal, Colombia, Poland, Japan

Lopetegui should've gone to the Spanish FA and asked permission, especially that he had just signed an extension. I don't blame Rubiales for firing him two days prior to the tournament, there ethics involved here and Lopetegui was trying to sly about this.

As for who will win it? Maybe it will be Germany. They are deep in every position and will go far, after all, they are Germany. As for Argentina, I am still interested to see what Sampaoli will do with Messi. He's only coached Messi a few games but I am not really thrilled with the idea of having Biglia and Masche in the midfield. The double pivot aka the double 5 will not work if you're DMF are slow and cannot distribute the ball to your midfield. The loss of Lanzini will be an important one but Maxi Meza who is standout for Independiente will do a good enough job. This team, is a bit deeper than the one we had in 2014. With Dybala on the bench and Cristian Pavon, they will have the players to go far. But by far, Argentina is the biggest enigma of the tournament..

Yeah, judging from their qualifiers plus that friendly against Spain, Argentina is definitely the toughest of the top teams to predict.

I’m trying to put together everyone’s predictions, so feel free to join in. Since this was on such short notice, go ahead and submit your group predictions and tie-breaker anytime between now and the end of Thursday, since there’s only one game.

That friendly shouldn't be an indicator where Argentina is. Messi and Kun were not there. It was somewhat of an experimental side.

As for my group picks.

A: Uruguay, Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia
B: Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Iran
C: France, Denmark, Peru, Australia
D: Argentina, Croatia, Nigeria, Iceland
E: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Costa Rica
F: Germany, Sweden, Mexico, South Korea
G: Belgium, England, Panama, Senegal
H: Colombia, Senegal, Poland, Japan

Top-scorer

Messi.

Saudi Arabia is BAD. And they’ll be one of the mid-tier teams when the World Cup expands to 48.

I saw that the final is at the same time as the Wimbledon final, which is funny.
